How to localize your App Store listing for more countries

Research local keywords, translate your metadata, and review a listing before publishing it in another language.

Localization is more than translating words

App Store localization adapts the product-page information customers see for a language. Apple supports localized names, subtitles, descriptions, keywords, and other product-page assets. Its localization overview recommends reviewing the experience for the regions you support.

A translated listing does not make the app itself available in that language. Be clear about the languages and features customers can actually use. Start with markets your product and support process can serve.

Research each storefront separately

List the problem the app solves and ask a fluent speaker how they would describe it. Search candidate phrases in the target storefront and inspect the results. Words that translate literally can carry different meanings, and the same language may be used differently across regions.

For an illustrative focus timer, a phrase meaning “study timer” may be relevant in one market, while another common phrase describes productivity at work. These are hypotheses to research, not measured keyword-volume findings. Record the phrase, storefront, intent, and relevant competing apps.

Prepare and review localized metadata

Write a clear localized name and subtitle first; then consider relevant terms for the keyword field without needlessly repeating words. Apple’s localization instructions explain how to manage localized app information.

Check the applicable field limits and the exact text in App Store Connect. Apple’s version reference specifies a 100-byte keyword limit, while its product-page guidance describes 100 characters; multibyte scripts make that distinction important. See our keyword field guide for a byte-count example.

Translate drafts, then measure the result

ASO Engine’s Metadata Translator can prepare drafts using your own OpenAI key. Review the meaning, tone, terminology, and character limits before updating App Store Connect. AI translation does not establish local search demand; OpenAI usage is billed separately.

Before publishing, save the old text and baseline rankings for the exact phrases and country. Afterward compare several observations and your own App Store Connect acquisition metrics. Other changes may influence results, so treat movement as a prompt to investigate rather than proof that translation caused growth.
